Pope holiday spirit: Pope donations ensure Merry Christmas for all

Christmas is a time of year when families come together to celebrate and exchange gifts, but for some children around the Pope/Fort Bragg area who don't have families, it takes a little extra effort from caring individuals to ensure they have a happy holiday.

Team Pope members donated more than 200 gifts to local underprivileged children under the care of the Cumberland County Department of Social Services in an effort to bring joy to those in need.

"This event is one of many great ways for those who have a little extra to give to make Christmas wonderful for a large group of children," said Tech. Sgt. Steven Kennedy, 440th Security Forces Squadron. "Due to the economy I was a little concerned that we would not be able to make our goal of 198 children. I was amazed with the response I received from our unit and the great people at the wing."

Sergeant Kennedy added that even though donors were asked to provide one item, many went above and beyond by providing several items per donation. Because of this, most of the children will receive two to five gifts each.

Without the help of many Pope members, we would not have met our goal.
