The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. This women-only course is going to be offered on Pope in November.

Founded in 1989, the RAD systems of self-defense for women and children are currently taught at nearly 400 colleges, universities, rape crisis centers, and municipal, state and county law enforcement agencies. Since its inception, the RAD systems have certified over 2000 instructors, who in turn have taught the program to over 45,000 women and children nationwide.

The program is an extension of 43rd Security Forces Squadron's newly implemented Community Oriented Policing initiative that has been started for residents on Pope. Initiated by Master Sgt. Joe Wood, 43rd SFS, the COP objective is not only to decrease crime and fear of crime by developing more proactive patrols, but also to educate residents of Pope on how they can better protect themselves in the event of an emergency.

The RAD course is a class teaching defense against rape, assault and abduction. The program is designed for the average woman with no previous experience or background in physical skills training. RAD systems developed the course through years of research and have created a structured, responsible, defensible and dynamic program that has remained the only self-defense program ever endorsed by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.

Education of one's own safety is necessary. It is the duty of the Sexual Assault Response Center and SFS to provide Team Pope members with realistic self-defense education.

The course is open to civilian and military females and is going to be held Nov. 7 through 8. On Nov. 7 the class will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 8. There is no cost to participate and each class member will receive both the training and RAD informational booklets. There is a 25- person maximum for the class, so early registration is recommended.
