Pope Remembers 9/11 Published Sept. 8, 2008 By Tech. Sgt. Angela McGill 43rd Operations Group POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Sept. 11 marked a tragic day in history as four high jacked commercial airlines were used as terrorist devices against the U.S. The North and South World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon and a filled-in mine in Shanksville, Penn., were all subject to these brutal attacks, which left thousands dead and wounded. In remembrance of those lives lost, Col. John McDonald, 43rd Airlift Wing Commander, and Pope will host a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony Thursday, 8:35 a.m. at Pope's Air Park. The ceremony is open to everyone and all are invited to attend. During the ceremony, events from 9/11 will be reflected upon. Throughout the day, bells will sound via the giant voice system, coinciding with the times the four aircraft crashed and with the times both World Trade Center towers fell. All Pope members are encouraged to take a moment of out their day to join Colonel McDonald for this ceremony in remembering the events of 9/11. The bells will ring throughout the day at the following times: 8:46 a.m. - First bell rings: Flight 11 crashes into North tower 9:03 a.m. - Second bell rings: Flight 175 crashes into South tower 9:37 a.m. - Third bell rings: Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon 9:59 a.m. - Fourth bell rings: South tower collapses 10:06 a.m. - Fifth bell rings: Flight 93 crashes in Pennsylvania 10:28 a.m. - Sixth bell rings: North tower collapses
