AFA awards scholarships to Air Force family members Published Aug. 1, 2008 By Air Force Association Scholarship Awards Program POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- The Pope Chapter of the Air Force Association has awarded four $1,000 scholarships to family members of Air Force personnel stationed at Pope Air Force Base. The awards are given annually to students who will be attending college this fall. Applicants were judged on academics, financial need, personal awards and community service. This year's winners were sponsored by Embarq Corporation, Merrill Lynch, and Rhudy's Jewelry Showroom. The award presentations were made at the meetings of the N.C. State Executive Committee of the Air Force Association which were held in Fayetteville on July 19. Scholarships were awarded to Katherine Nolan, Lionel Earl III, Imelda Arce and Robin Powell. The AFA Pope Chapter Teacher of the Year was awarded to Tonia Bonner, who teaches at the Cumberland County Web Academy where she is responsible for the Aeroscholars Facilitator program. She led the 2008 Science Olympiad team to a first place finish and was instrumental in implementing innovative educational programs.
