Airmen’s Attic: Avenue for Support Published July 24, 2008 By Emily Smith 43rd Airlift Wing Public Affairs POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- The Airman & Family Readiness Center's Airmen's Attic could be considered the hidden gem of Pope. The small thrift shop is staffed by the friendliest volunteers one could imagine. The Airmen's Attic was created many years ago to offset living expenses for young Airmen and their families who were setting up for their first home. Today, it still offers the same pleasantries as when it was first opened. The shop contains a variety of items ranging from furniture to knick knacks. Other items include baby clothes, toys, kitchen utensils, military uniforms (to include blues), books and clothes. And best of all, it's free. The Airmen's Attic is open to active duty Air Force members who are ranks E-1 through E-4, regardless of time of service and E-5s with fewer than eight years in service. The attic is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is located in room 1072 of the A&FRC. It is stocked purely by Airmen donations, usually by those PCSing in or out of Pope, as well as by retirees looking to clear out unused items. Regardless of where the donations come from, they are ensured to better the lives of the Pope Airmen that need them most. For more information on how to donate or how to volunteer at the Airmen's Attic, call Elizabeth Smothers at the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 394-2538 or e-mail elizabeth.smothers@pope.af.mil.
