Waste Busters program looks to curb fraud, waste, abuse Published June 19, 2008 By Master Sgt. Mike Crawley 43rd Airlift Wing Deputy Inspector General POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Everyday most of us observe something that doesn't make sense or maybe makes us go' umm... I wonder why they or we are doing that this way?' Sometimes it is because of guidance or policy, but other times it may be because that is just the way "we've always done it." Well I believe there are also times when we just choose not to stop, change or re-evaluate our processes because we don't have the time. My point here is that sometimes you have to make the time. We no longer operate in a world where wasteful processes or harm to the environment is acceptable. My challenge to you is to identify and stop Waste! Ask yourself this... -Do you recycle? (Remember, it is the law to recycle in the Air Force) -Do you leave your government vehicle running? (Would you leave your car running?) -Do you exchange your overstocked or unused supplies for items you use and need? -Do you turn the lights out when you leave your office? -Do you turn in equipment to the Defense Reutilization and Management Office in-sourcing it to other squadrons who probably have to buy the same or similar pieces of equipment? As you can see, we can do this all day long... my end point here is there are so many things WE can all do to stop waste. Today, your Pope IG, under the Fraud, Waste and Abuse (FWA) program is beginning a recognition program called Waste Busters. We will recognize those individuals and units that make efforts to reduce waste in their work centers and across Pope. Send your waste buster information to the "43 AW/IG" organization box and choose to make a difference. And who knows... your efforts may even be eligible for cash and awards through the IDEA program.
