Company grade officers from several different squadrons visited the Air Force ROTC detachment at North Carolina State University March 12 for the 595th Cadet Wing's Career Day.

The cadets were able to get perspective on flying, security forces, civil engineering, services, maintenance, public affairs and logistics readiness, speaking to more than 75 cadets for more than an hour and then taking questions in a one-on-one environment for 30 minutes after.

"This has been one of the best experiences for the cadets," Col. David Sammons, Detachment 595 Commander.

The cadets asked many questions about career fields, but were just as interested in Air Force experiences and the current deployment cycles.

"I was very surprised with the cadets' professionalism and willingness to learn," 1st Lt. Jon Felmet, 43rd Services Squadron, said. "They had very insightful questions and seemed very involved with taking the reins of their careers -- that's pretty impressive so early in their military careers."

1st Lt. Tim Scheffler, 43rd Civil Engineer Squadron, added, "I like what I do and I want to share my passion with those following in my footsteps. Sometimes it's too easy to get caught up in the small things - an opportunity like this brings the big picture back in focus."

The day began with several cadets finding out where their active duty careers will begin. Pilot and navigator selects received base assignments for training and pre-training status. Other cadets also received their initial job assignments and then the floor was opened to the nine officers from Pope.

"I wanted to make sure that the cadets were properly informed about what is really going on in Security Forces, and the AF as a whole," 2nd Lt. Michael Alvord, 43rd Security Forces Squadron, said.

Capt. Michael Campos, 43rd Maintenance Squadron, is a NCSU alumnus and said this was his first trip back inside the detachment since he graduated nine years ago.

After the open forum, the cadet wing presented the officers with their detachment coin.

"I made the visit because I remember being a cadet and actually wondering what it's really like as a young CGO," Lieutenant Felmet said. "I also wasn't sure what I wanted to do in the Air Force - so what a better way to help others who are in the same situation."
