Beginning May 2007, North Carolina is collaborating with local community colleges and school systems to open teacher education programs in Wake, Lee, Cumberland and Nash counties.

Each location will be accepting 50 individuals for a one-year lateral entry program that will lead to licensure in the areas of science, math, English, social studies, French or Spanish at the high school or middle school level.

Entrance requirements for the program are a four-year degree and a 2.5 grade point average. Classes are held in the evening, located in individual communities, and are taught primarily by lead teachers from local public schools.

The cost of the program, which consists of 18 total undergraduate credit hours, is estimated to be approximately $2,400, including tuition, books and supplies. In Cumberland County, classes will begin June 4, and will be held at the Cumberland County Educational Resource Center in Fayetteville.

For more information on this program or other lateral entry teaching programs, contact Dr. Grant Holley, alternative licensure director, at grant_holley@ncsu.edu. The local point of contact is the school liaison officer at 394-2538.
