Turkeys link Airmen, families Published Dec. 7, 2006 By Senior Airman Cassandra Locke Editor POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Imagine being away from home for the first time during the holiday season at an unfamiliar place. Some Airmen may be feeling this way and may want to share Thanksgiving with a family. The 43rd Services Squadron is sponsoring a program for families to open their homes and hearts to these Airmen called "Adopt an Airman." Pope families can sign up to host an Airman in their home to share Thanksgiving with at the Community Center before Nov. 17. "Many are away from home for the first time and the holidays can be stressful and depressing," said Angel Davis, Pope Community Center director. Families will be notified and introduced to their new "adopted" Airman Nov. 21. The community center director will call the families and adopted Airmen to coordinate a time for them to meet. Then the "adoptees" will present their new family with a turkey during the meeting. The turkey will be provided by 43rd SVS at no expense to the family or the Airmen. "It is a labor of love and is truly rewarding. Our goal is to have no one be alone eating in the dining halls," said Ms. Davis. So far, there are 11 Airmen and nine families signed up. For more information on signing up, call Ms. Davis at 394-2779.
