Choose Drug Free Published Oct. 19, 2006 By Tracy Deveault Drug Demand Reduction Program POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Each year, Red Ribbon Week provides us with an opportunity to renew our commitment to a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. The event also highlights our dedication to education and prevention efforts in our schools and communities. Red Ribbons can be picked up at the Drug Testing Office in Bldg. 430. The Red Ribbons are a symbol of unity against the illegal use of drugs. This public display is in response to the tragic 1985 murder of Federal Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena while he was investigating Mexican drug traffickers. This murder incited angry parent groups and others to began wearing red ribbons as a way to take a public stand against the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and to show their support of drug-free youth. Now a national celebration, Red Ribbon Week allows educators, parents, students and others to focus on the work being done by the growing millions who have pledged to live drug-free. Red Ribbon Campaign is a campaign "of the people, for the people, and by the people." Too many people have been lost to drugs, too many families have been torn apart and too many dreams have been shattered. Please help us in celebrating Red Ribbon Week and uniting Americans in one goal against drug abuse. For additional information on Red Ribbon Week, call at 394-1182.
