Though Tropical Depression Ernesto skimmed by Pope Sept. 1, the base was prepared for the possibility of several inches of rain and high wind gusts.

Base members took precautions by putting sandbags around their buildings, covering their computers with plastic and breaking down pallets.

"The base did an excellent job preparing for the worst, without creating a frenzy," said Col. John McDonald, 43rd Airlift Wing vice commander.

Now that hurricane season is in effect it's important that Airmen be prepared in case of severe weather. To prepare for a hurricane, it is recommended that you create a family disaster plan, create a disaster supply kit and secure your home.

When developing a family disaster plan, discuss the type of hazards that could affect your family. Know you home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind. Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home for each hurricane hazard. Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet. Have an out-of-state friend as a family contact so all your family members have a single point of contact.

When preparing a disaster supply kit, consider items like water, non-perishable food items, first aid kit, medicines, hygiene items, flashlights, batteries, cell phone, cash, keys, pet care items, tools and important documents.
