Staff Sgt. Franklin Woods, 43rd Logistics Readiness Squadron, deployed as convoy support during a previous air expeditionary rotation. During a routine transport mission, his vehicle, an M195 tractor trailor, was hit by an improvised explosive device. Because the IED detonated just feet from the convoy, shrapnel penetrated the engine block inflicting major damage to the undercarriage but did not damage the cab where Airmen were sitting.
