  • Published
  • By 43rd Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Pope is now under HURCON 3. The National Hurricane Center's models are getting a better handle on the movement of Hanna. According to the 04/0900Z update, the storm track has continued along the coast of NC/SC. We should receive 30kt winds by 2000L on Friday Sept 5, 2008 and they will last until 0630L on Saturday Sept 6, 2008. The maximum winds will be 39kts (sustained) with gusts up to 49kts at 0130L on Saturday. Expect 2-3 inches of rain accumulation. At the present, Hanna is moving to the Northwest and picking up speed. Because of this, it looks like the winds will arrive on Friday evening.

Tips for hurricane preparedness:

 Keep your automobile gas tank full
 Fill containers with water for drinking
 Make sure you have enough canned goods and nonperishable food items for several days
 Secure all loose outside objects or place them inside
 Advise relatives or close friends, as well as your unit supervisor and/or Phoenix Spouse representative of your status or intentions
 Monitor local radio and TV stations for information
As Hurricane Hanna makes its approach:
 Monitor local radio and TV stations for updates and information
 Stay in your house if it is sturdy and on high ground, unless advised by local authorities to evacuate
 Move valuables upstairs or off the floor
 Only use telephones for emergencies
 Secure boats or trailers close to house
If you are advised to evacuate (for instance, if you live in a mobile home or a low-lying area that could be affected by storm tide or flooding):
 Leave as soon as possible
 Do not travel to the south toward South Carolina since that is the direction the hurricane is approaching from
 Shut off all utilities
 Travel light and stay on major roads as much as possible for safety purposes
 Leave food and water for pets, since shelters will not accept them
 Drive carefully to the nearest designated shelter (the Pope AFB shelter is the Base Fitness Center)

Once the all-clear is given:
 Keep sheltered until released
 Don't go sightseeing - you may hamper emergency rescue
 If you must go outside, watch for hazards (power lines down, washed out roads, etc.)
 Eat/drink only from approved sources
 Report broken/damaged utilities
 Be on guard for dangerous animals
 Monitor local TV and radio stations for more information
 Maintain contact with supervisor/Phoenix Spouse so they know your status
 More information can be gained by calling 394-WORK or 1-800-POPE EVAC
