Vacation Bible School provides fun for all

Pope Chapel's summertime Vacation Bible School took place from June 17-21 at Pope Elementary School. Nearly 50 school-aged children participated in the day camp.

The theme for this year's camp was Son World, a spin off of theme-parks like Disney World or Six Flags. Son World is a Gospel Light curriculum that encouraged all the children to make the right choices while still having fun.

Kristen Dunn, one of the VBS coordinators, commented on the curriculum. "We really wanted to encourage the children to make good decisions. To choose to obey, to choose to do the right thing, to choose to follow Christ and His example," she said.

Throughout the week, the children learned songs and dances that corresponded to the Bible story they were learning that day. They also performed skits for their friends and families.

Cynthia Cline, another of the camp coordinators, said that the music was very contemporary and geared towards young minds. "The children just had a blast," she said. "It was an adventure."

Even parents enjoyed the week's festivities. "The parents of the children were so thankful," Ms. Dunn said. "A parent said to me that this camp was the happiest that they had ever seen their children at any VBS."

Planning for Vacation Bible School is a long process. The five-day event takes eight months and at least 20 volunteers to fully plan. The camp coordinators have already chosen a theme and curriculum for next summer and are looking for volunteers to help plan.

"All the stress is in the preparation," Ms. Cline said. "During the actual week of the camp, you see alot of attitudes changed. This camp couldn't have happened without the great support from our many volunteers and team members, especially VBS director Paula Hopel. She was incredible."
