XTERRA Triathlon takes over Smith Lake Published May 11, 2008 By 2nd Lt. Chris Hoyler 43rd Airlift Wing Public Affairs POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Looking for something active to do this Memorial Day weekend? The XTERRA Triathlon series is back for the second consecutive year with its Smith Lake race, and one of Pope's own is looking for individual and team participants and volunteers for race day. Staff Sgt. Jonathan Kiley, 373rd Training Squadron, is a regular competitor in XTERRA America Tour events, and he is again organizing the Smith Lake event, set for May 25. The event consists of a 1,000 meter swim, 18-mile mountain bike and 3.2 mile trail run. For those who have never participated in a triathlon, Sergeant Kiley said it's a good way to get active, and this event can ease the burden of jumping right into a full triathlon with no competitive experience. "Even if you don't want to do the whole race you can sign up as a team," Sergeant Kiley said. "Teams of two and three slots are available." Last year's event drew 110 participants, and with this year's turnout expected to be at least as big, if not bigger, there is a need for race-day volunteers to serve as course marshals and at water stations. Volunteers would only be needed on race day from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a spectator event, Sergeant Kiley said, so even if people can't find the time to participate, volunteering will give them the full XTERRA experience. "I guarantee you will be inspired," Sergeant Kiley said. "XTERRA races are fun for the whole family and can be a great way to become more active."
