Keystone communities Published Oct. 19, 2006 By Amanda Shaffer 43rd Services Squadron Youth Center POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- This fall the Keystone and Torch Clubs are getting back into full swing at the Pope Youth Center. The clubs, open to Youth Center member teens and preteens, serve as the premiere community service organizations for youth within the Pope community. The clubs are planning to volunteer many hours to assist with various family-oriented programs on Pope, including the upcoming Halloween Carnival and Costume Contest. Past projects of the clubs have included various clean-up days around base, a Pet Supplies Drive to benefit the Fayetteville Animal Protection Society, and preteen and teen dances. The Torch and Keystone Clubs are also responsible for providing youth input into the monthly Youth Center activities calendar. Both clubs are mentored by staff members and Taya Ferriere, the 2006 Pope Youth of the Year. But in spite of the full schedule of community service that each club maintains, there is still time for fun activities as well. Both clubs are currently fundraising towards a spring fieldtrip to a destination that the members will determine, vote on, and budget for. Past trips have included local amusement parks, museums, and sporting events. "These clubs are a great way for youth to gain experience in a leadership and service role," Zuhal O'Haver, Youth Center Teen and Keystone Coordinator. "The Torch and Keystone clubs teach our teens about the importance of giving back to their community." For more details on the Keystone and Torch Clubs, call 394-1045.
